Neither of my pregnancies were easily achieved and for many couples trying to get pregnant the whole event can feel like an endurance task which becomes difficult to cope with
Having been diagnosed with ‘Polycistic Ovary Syndrome’ (PCOS) I knew that getting pregnant may not be that straightforward. Having had no success after a year of trying to conceive, I went down the ‘conventional’ fertility treatment route for nearly two years before my first pregnancy, and boy was it a physical and emotional rollercoaster ride. As many women will agree, when there is so much desperation to conceive, experiencing such high levels of stress can indeed be counterproductive and hinder chances of getting pregnant.
I lost count of the number of times I was told to “just relax”, but when you begin to feel like a failure and are being pushed from pillar to post and still getting nowhere, stress is unavoidable.
I decided to challenge my health problems and was determined not to let them quash my chances of having our much wanted baby. I looked online and in books and after much searching decided to explore the ‘alternative remedy’ approach. I met a wonderful Chinese lady who on first meeting seemed so gentle and reassuring and really made me feel at ease. She immediately gave me hope in informing me that she had treated many women in the past with PCOS and on several occasions treatment had led to successful pregnancies.
I embarked on a course of reflexology and homeopathy, and I can honestly say that after only two or three treatments I felt a whole lot better in myself. I was suddenly far more relaxed and also felt physically more vibrant too. Within a period of three months I discovered I was pregnant. On reflection after nearly two years of drugs and fertility treatments, and just three months of alternative therapies, I knew next time what option I was going to take.
And yes, second time around I began having alternative treatments the moment my physician offered to refer me for fertility treatment. No way was I going through that again! This time I had acupuncture and reflexology, and although it took a little longer than last time, I once again was pregnant within just six months.
Up until then I had never been a great advocate of such treatments, and possibly perceived them to be a waste of time and money. My attitude has entirely changed, and for any medical problem I now face, I always go down the ‘alternative’ route first.
